a site on a cell, as of the heart, that, upon interaction with epinephrine or norepinephrine, controls heartbeat and heart contractability, vasodilation, smooth muscle inhibition, and other physiological processes. Also,be'ta-re•cep'tor.Also called beta-adrenergic receptor. Cf. alpha receptor.
