2. Strait of, Also called Gut of Canso. a channel in SE Canada that separates mainland Nova Scotia from Cape Breton Island, flowing NW from the Atlantic Ocean to Northumberland Strait. ab. 17 mi. (27 km) long and 1 mi. (1.6 km) wide.
