Chem.
a colorless, nonflammable, water-soluble, suffocating gas, SO₂, formed when sulfur burns: used chiefly in the manufacture of chemicals such as sulfuric acid, in preserving fruits and vegetables, and in bleaching, disinfecting, and fumigating.
