any of several long-winged seabirds, often used as food, esp. Puffinus tenuirostris (short-tailed shearwater) of Australia and Puffinus griseus (sooty shearwater), which breeds in the Southern Hemisphere and winters in the Northern Hemisphere. Also,mut'ton-bird".
