1. an island in San Francisco Bay between Oakland and San Francisco, California: a 500 ft. (152 m) two-story tunnel across this island connects the two spans of the San Francisco–Oakland bridge.
2. (l.c.) a trailing plant, Satureja douglasii, of the mint family, native to the Pacific coast of North America, having egg-shaped leaves, solitary white flowers, and branches that root at the tips, used formerly in medicine as an anthelmintic and emmenagogue.
